WHAT IS BIOGLITTER®?

Bioglitter® is the trademark and brand name of a range of eco-friendly alternatives to plastic glitter. It has been developed and continues to be developed, to tackle the part of microplastic pollution created by glitter.

This is not glitter… This is Bioglitter®

Bioglitter’s appearance is the only similarity with plastic glitter, Bioglitter® is based on completely different raw materials.

Invented by Ronald Britton Ltd, a British company and since May 2023 owned by Sigmund Lindner GmbH, Bioglitter® , uses natural and plant derived material as its basis rather than plastic.  It is PROVEN through OECD301 biodegradability testing as well as ISO14851 and ISO14852 freshwater biodegradability testing of the whole Bioglitter® product, core and coating, to quickly biodegrade into harmless substances in the natural environment.

Bioglitter® is designed to biodegrade quickly and safely in natural freshwater environments.  Bioglitter® utilises  TÜV OK biodegradable WATER certification as a simple and clear means of communicating this fact to customers.  This approach has been taken as terms such as ‘100% plastic free’ and ‘100% biodegradable’ can be used without qualification and don’t necessarily describe the eco credentials of a product.

We believe OK biodegradable WATER certification cuts through the confusion.  Moreover, the ISO14851 and ISO14852 tests at the heart of this certification are also specified by ECHA (European Chemicals Agency) in its proposed EU Microplastic legislation due to be published in 2022. These tests are used to determine whether or not a polymeric material is considered a microplastic.

Currently, six of the seven Bioglitter® product ranges are certified to the very high standard of  TÜV Austria, OK biodegradable WATER. A level of certification considered the highest of its kind in the world.

• Bioglitter® is designed to biodegrade quickly and safely in the natural environment
• We believe that certification cuts through confusing messages around plastic content and biodegradability
• Biodegradable doesn’t mean an excuse to litter, we do not encourage indiscriminate use of glitter outdoors
